#4: Communication 101: The Sequel

Let’s recap: we had talked about how you sucked at communicating (which I’m sure you’re not actually bad at). Then I outlined some fundamental principals of persuasion, which is the underlying reason why we communicate. Then I left you with a viable list of things to consider when speaking to overs to create the most cohesive presentation of ideas.

This time, I want to talk about how to establish a solid connection between you and the person you are trying to communicate with. Something that I’ve learned is the acronym *FROM.

FROM stands for Future, Reality, Obstacles, and Meaning. By visiting these four principles, you are able to both establish a genuine relationship, understand the situation more deeply, and relate it back to them, their lives, and their goals.

This is particularly important for anyone in a position to be speaking about persuasion, whether it be in presentation, business, or for better overall interpersonal skills.


FUTURE: Where is it that you want to be doing? Where do you want to be 1, 5, 10 years down the line? What do you envision your life looking like then on a sleepy Sunday afternoon? As leaders, we want to get the clearest picture of where people are headed.

REALITY: Where are you right now? What is the current situation day-to-day? What is going on right now in your life, your career, and your relationships? If you ask these questions correctly, you should be able to visualize the gap between where they want to go and where they are currently. This will pave way for you to offer your assistance and expertise as the leader to help them bridge that gap.

OBSTACLES: What are some road blacks you either are currently dealing with or plan on dealing with to reach those long term objectives?

MEANING: Why is getting to that future goal important? And does that life line up with the type of lifestyle they would live? We want to thoroughly understand this to know what motivates and energizes them (because the primary motivator is rarely money itself) in a way for communication to be genuine and authentic.

In practicing all of these basic techniques, we are able to connect with others in a way to make more defined decisions on how to interact with others going forward, as well as establishing a space of safe space for growth and vulnerability. All the basic principles for successful leadership and worthwhile conversation.
